During the festival of raksha bandhan, Adivasi (tribal) women from Palghar district of Maharashtra tied rakhis on armed forces personnel in Siachen base camp & two other camps in the border areas of Ladakh, as well as sent rakhis to camps in the North East. A total of 10,000 special handmade bamboo rakhis were distributed.
This unique form of celebrating the festival was made possible with sponsorship from Gem & Jewellery National Relief Foundation (GJNRF).
The women are participants in a project run in Vikramgadh by Keshavshrusti Puraskar Samiti and the bamboo rakhis they make during the festival has become a sustainable source of income since last four years.
This year, the visit to Ladakh and the distribution in that area as well as in North East was coordinated with the help of Aseem Foundation. The team members reported that the army personnel were pleasantly surprised and became quite emotional as a result of this gesture.
In appreciation of the role played by GJNRF, the group of women also met trustees of the GJNRF and symbolically tied rakhis for them as well.
