In early August, Gem & Jewellery National Relied Foundation (GJNRF) donated 10,000 tirangas rakhis manufactured by tribal women in Palghar district of Maharashtra for distribution to various battalions of Indian soldiers posted on active duty on the country’s borders. The campaign was to enable a combined celebration of the Raksha Bandhan festival and the Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav (75th anniversary of Independence).
The project was organized by Keshav Srushti Gram Vikas Yojana, an organization that helps tribal women become self-reliant.
Keshav Srushti ensured that the rakhis were distributed in many different parts of the country, including 2,500 to the 373 Artillery Brigade (J&K), 2,000 to ITBP PO Choglamsar in Leh (Ladakh), 1,000 each at the Rajouri Front (J&K), to 58 Rashtriya Rifles (Bihar), to 63 Rashtriya Rifles (Bihar), to PWD (R&B) Department (J&K), and Kibithoo (Arunachal Pradesh) as well as 500 to the BSF at Sedata – Bhuj (Gujarat).
Notably, villages in Kibithoo area in Arunachal are the first in the country to see the sun rays each morning.
Keshav Srushti Gram Vikas Yojana took up this project, manufacturing the rakhis from natural fibres like banana, to help the tribal women. The organization believes projects like this go a long way in generating employment for the women, enhancing self-respect and making them self-sufficient (atma-nirbhar) in the years to come.
